Best Practices for Requesting Informational Interviews with Professionals of All Ages



When you’re not sure about a career or an industry, an informational interview is a great way to have an informal conversation with a person who is already working in that field.

During this interview, you can ask questions to gain clarity about what it’s like to work in the industry and what to expect in a related position. You’ll find people from several generations working in the jobs that interest you, so it’s best to have a different approach for each one. Here are a few things to consider.


Think about the mode of communication.

Firstly, you need to think about how to reach the person you would like to talk to. Each generation has what would be considered their preferred modes of communication. For example, it might be best to reach a Boomer by making a phone call while a Millennial might prefer a DM or email. Get comfortable using all forms of communication in order to easily reach any generation.


Think about motivation.

Understanding the motivations of people from different generations is helpful when asking for anything. For example, a Boomer or Gen Xer likes it when you speak to them in a clear manner and use direct language. They are motivated when you show appreciation for their knowledge. Whereas, a Millennial prefers a quick and direct conversation. They will be motivated by recognizing they have a unique perspective and by giving them feedback.


Think about timing and location.

Each generation is also looking for different times and places to meet. Consider what time of the day a Boomer might want to meet versus a Gen Zer. When it comes to a location, for certain a Boomer or Gen Xer might prefer to meet in person while a Millennial or Gen Zer could be open to a Facetime call or something similar. Be open to their input on how and when to meet.


An informational interview is an excellent way to find out the real deal behind a job or industry.

When you have a conversation with someone behind-the-scenes, you learn details you wouldn’t know just reading about the job on paper. You might also gain a valuable connection to your industry through this simple action.
