Building a Skill Set that Appeals to Employers Across Generations

You may have realized there is a difference in how each generation likes to work, manage, and communicate.

They also differ in their values. Having a workforce that ranges from pre-Boomers to Gen Z, issues can arise when trying to please all of them. But if you’re setting out to build a skill set that appeals to employers from all generations, here are some ideas to get started.

Communication.

Each generation is likely to gravitate toward a specific way of communicating. For example, Boomers and Gen X might prefer to speak to you on the phone or meet in person, while Millennials might email you and Gen Z seeks you out through social media. To build a skill set that pleases all generations, you must master each of these forms: in-person, phone, email, and social media. The best way to do this is to practice. You could go to some networking events to work on your face-to-face contact, make calls when you could email, and look at some templates online to email effectively with Millennials. Also, watch some videos on how to communicate through platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and X if you are rusty using them.

Approaches to tasks.

Every generation you encounter will also have their own way of approaching tasks. Boomers can be more methodical and pay attention to detail while Gen X appreciates critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Millennials like to collaborate and work as a team while Gen Z adapts quickly and easily learns new skills as needed. There is a wide variety of skill sets that impress the different generations. Focus on one from each generation to build a solid skill set that will impress each one.

Technology.

While Boomers may struggle with some of the rapidly changing technologies, Gen Z and Millennials tend to adjust well to whatever is thrown at them. Gen X can also adapt to what they are asked to learn in terms of technology. If you can build a strong skill set around technology, you will fit right in with younger generations and be able to help out Boomers if they approach you for assistance. So, stay current on what programs and social media affect your industry.

In order to land a job in this competitive marketplace, it’s critical to appeal to employers from all generations.

Start by researching what drives each generation because in those qualities, you’ll find the skills they most value. Once you have a grasp on these skills, you can start finding ways to develop them. It may take some extra work, but finding out who your boss might be and highlighting skills their generation would appreciate just might land you that next job.
