How Gen Z Can Showcase Their Willingness to Learn and Adapt When Applying for Jobs

As a Gen Zer in the workplace, you bring a unique set of qualities to a company.

You’re incredibly tech savvy, you care deeply about world issues, and you highly value working as a team. When you’re applying for jobs, it’s important to be able to relate to the generation that is hiring you. Here are some ways you can demonstrate you have a strong willingness to learn and adapt when applying for a job.

List what you’re learning on your own time.

A willingness to learn is shown clearly when you are trying to learn new skills when you’re not required to. This could be featured as certifications you’ve completed or courses you’ve taken listed on your resume. It can also be shown in an interview by talking about what you learned at a recent industry conference or seminar you attended or perhaps even somewhere you’ve volunteered. These all demonstrate that you have self-motivation to learn.

Ask the right questions.

When you get to the interview stage, you can really show an employer how willing you are to learn and adapt to any environment. One way to do this is to request more information about what training opportunities the company offers. Ask the interviewer if they regularly send employees to conferences or seminars or if they offer courses for you to learn more about your job and industry. This will help you demonstrate that you would like to grow, and potentially even grow with the company which is appealing to avoid high turnover.

Come prepared with your own ideas.

Also during an interview, you can show an employer how much you know about a company and what you’re willing to do to fit in. Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to find information about a company online before you interview. You can also reach out to current employees or managers through LinkedIn to ask specific questions. Learn about a problem the company faces and pitch your solution during the interview. This will show that you are willing to research and find ways to adapt to their company culture and deal with the issues they face.

You never know for sure what quality will most stand out to a potential employer, but if you demonstrate that you love to learn and are flexible to cope with any environment, you are bound to look attractive to just about any organization as a Gen Z applicant.

Make sure you explain in your resume, cover letters, and during interviews that you are open to new ideas and welcome feedback. In fact, you could even mention during an interview that you are open to their input on how you can better fit in with their company’s culture. Also, a showing a good attitude will go far as that will be needed to be open and adaptable.
