What does it mean to be a well-rounded candidate for a job?
It means to not only show competence for your field but to also be committed to personal and professional growth. When you’re applying for jobs, you could end up interviewing with someone from a different generation than you. If you plan ahead to showcase different aspects of how you’re well-rounded to each different generation, you have a better chance of being considered for the job.
Boomers.
This generation were raised by parents who endured the Great Depression and World War II. They aren’t afraid of hard work and appreciate recognition in their own careers. They are also goal oriented and traditional. To show you are well-rounded to this generation, focus on showing ambition. Demonstrate you hope to accomplish a lot in your new position and that you know how to put in hard work. Also, give several examples of times when you set and achieved goals.
Gen X.
The generation who mostly raised themselves values independence, and they appreciate healthy work-life balance. They generally love flexible schedules and working from home. They don’t appreciate being micromanaged. You will stand out as a potential candidate to this generation by showing how well you handle working independently. Give examples of how you work under little supervision. Also, show them you can work alongside others collaboratively so they can see you’ll allow others to make their own choices.
Millennials.
Some people think that Millennials most closely resemble the generation just before them, Gen X. They also value independence and flexibility at a job. They appreciate companies that have a mission they can relate to. To show a Millennial you are well-rounded in a way that will speak to them, show them you can find solutions to problems on your own. Talk about charities that are important to you and give illustrations of how you support those causes that matter to you.
Gen Z.
This generation also likes to find a sense of purpose when it comes to their jobs. They want to be doing work that matters in the world. They like to see corporations be socially responsible, and they like to see these same principles applied internally. Watching previous generations struggle, they appreciate financial incentives at their jobs. A Gen Zer will see you as well-rounded if you also demonstrate how you are socially responsible. They will want to see not only task-related skill sets but also acceptance of diversity.
