In the competitive world of landing a federal job, networking is perhaps the number one way of securing a position. Early in your job search, you are encouraged to build a solid network of contacts within your career field.
Even though many federal jobs are filled based on competition, there are standout advantages to networking. Here are a few ways to network for federal employees.
Informational interview. This type of interview is a networking strategy of meeting with someone in your desired field in order to learn about their personal experiences and path to employment. It is not a meeting where you are strictly seeking a job. It’s also not a traditional interview where you are applying for an open position. You can use this as a federal employee to find out more information about what different jobs are out there and form connections with those people who may lead you to potential job opportunities.
Shadow another professional. Job shadowing is a useful tool for networking. It allows you to look inside into how someone works and interacts in their workplace. It helps you build or further a relationship with a contact you have, and it allows you to gather insights on the career path you’re on. At the same time, you can learn about any opportunities that may be out there in the federal workplace. Use your online resources. If you want to network for a federal position, make sure you’re on the platforms where they may be looking to connect with you.
