Unique Qualities Millennials Can Highlight to Stand Out in a Competitive Job Market

When managers complain about certain generations and their shortcomings in the workplace, their issues are often based on stereotypes. Of course, there rare common characteristics for all generations, and there are some that apply to Millennials. If you’re born between about 1980 to the mid-90s, you may find you have certain skills and qualities in common with your peers. Here are a few ways to use these to your advantage when applying for a job.

Digitally engaged.

Like your Gen Z counterparts, you are comfortable with all kinds of technology. You likely remember a time without cell phones or social media, but this would be when you were very young. Since you’ve been an adult, technology has reigned and you’ve been mastering it. Show how well you adjust to new programs and how you use technology to support your work. Demonstrate how technology makes you more productive and contributes to your work satisfaction.

Passionate.

Millennials are idealistic, and this makes you a passionate group of people. You are motivated by “the desire to find meaning and joy,” in what you do according to Forbes. You love accomplishing goals as a group and do not like to waste time. You can highlight this to an employer by showing how you are skilled at engaging your customers’ hearts in a truly genuine way.

Adaptable.

As a Millennial, you are known to be a jack-of-all-trades. You actually don’t like the restrictions of a job description and are skilled at adapting to changing environments. You are not afraid to try doing things in a new way or learning a new skill. In addition, you are good at performing under pressure or without knowing how things are going to turn out. You can highlight this quality by remaining open to performing tasks an employer wants you to try outside your normal duties.

Born and raised during the invention of many of our modern-day technologies, Millennials broke the mold on typical work ethics and professionalism. To many employers, Millennials are seen as a breath of fresh air in the work place. As Boomers and Gen X begin to retire, you will have a greater influence over the job market. Take advantage of your place in the workforce and demonstrate what unique qualities you can bring to a team.
